Threshold concepts (Meyer, Land and Baillie, 2010) have become a useful basis for developing the overarching framework for a course, and indeed modules (whilst accepting that in any given module threshold concepts for many may remain liminal). A threshold concept will probably delineate a particular conceptual space, serving a specific and limited purpose (Jan Smith 2006). Our discussions with practitioners in a range of disciplinary areas have led us to conclude that a threshold concept, across a range of subject contexts, is likely to be: Threshold concepts are conceived as cognitive portals to new and previously inaccessible ways of thinking in a domain. They are transformative, integrative, irreversible, and troublesome concepts that open the door to highly productive ways of thinking in a discipline.

Threshold concepts have been proposed as a way of characterising the progression of students at the discipline level. Meyer and Land (2003, 2006) suggest that within each subject there are certain ideas that present themselves to students as portals that can open up a new way of thinking within a particular domain. Since the inception of threshold concept theory many researchers in the field have focused on identifying threshold concepts using the attributes identified by Meyer and land (2003): threshold concepts are transformative (they change the learner’s whole way of thinking), irreversible (they are hard to unlearn, as with Threshold concepts as a bridge between skills and content. According to Meyer and Land, mastering a threshold concept requires the learner to enter an uncomfortable space where they must question what they already know, wrestle with abstract ideas, and seek new ways to organize and process information.
